California Blue Cut wildfire leads to state of emergency declaration

The Blue Cut Fire is the latest of multiple wildfires to threaten properties in California. As of Aug. 17, the Los Angeles Times reported that there was "no containment in sight" for this blaze, which has prompted evacuations, destroyed structures and pushed through the Cajon Pass area, northwest of San Bernardino.

According to the source, the fire has consumed 30,000 acres of land, though the number of buildings it has impacted is currently unknown. State Gov. Edmund Brown announced a state of emergency, recognizing that the Blue Cut Fire is "expanding rapidly."

This declaration also refers to a 2014 action regarding California's severe drought. Dry conditions reportedly contributed to the blaze, making it easier for it to spread and forcing both evacuations and road closures.

"Dry conditions reportedly contributed to the blaze."

This comes just days after Brown's office declared two other fire-related emergencies on Aug.15: The Chimney Fire in San Luis Obispo County and the Clayton Fire in Lake County.

One of the largest wildfires started by natural causes was the 2012 Rush Fire in Lassen County, according to 2015 information from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

By Aug. 23, the Blue Cut Fire was said to be fully contained. A different Los Angeles Times story stated as many 318 buildings were destroyed in this blaze, with 105 of them homes and 82,000 people driven out of their houses.

Major blazes like this can drain insurance company resources and leave them struggling to satisfy all policyholders. Property adjusters should have the experience to accurately estimate extensive structural damage, including that from a wildfire. BrightClaim, through its extensive network of credentialed adjusters, can assist insurers with locating adjusting resources to handle any type or size of loss.
