Hailstorm hits Gibson County, Indiana and causes four injuries

Southwestern Indiana experienced significant damage on Tuesday when severe thunderstorms hit the region. Four people were injured, thousands of homes lost electricity and baseball-sized hail hit communities in Gibson County.

Severe winds were able to knock down trees in the area and the storm nearly ruined a festival in Oakland City. While a storm warning did come in at 5:50 p.m., the Sweet Corn Festival scheduled for 6 p.m. was set to begin as scheduled.

Twenty minutes later, a heavy storm hit the festival, bringing down baseball-sized hail onto the community. The hail injured four people and one woman was taken to the hospital.

"People started pulling everyone off the streets, into their homes and businesses to get them out of the storm, out of the hail," Sonja Cox, an attendee of the parade, told the Courier Press.

Property damage from the hail will lead to a rise in claims processing work for insurers located in Gibson County. A leak from a propane company 25 miles west of Evansville also led to major issues for these residents, as a number of homes had to be evacuated during this time.

Meteorologists have stated that winds up to 80 miles per hour blew through southwestern Indiana, damaged a barn in Oakland City and threw a segment of a roof onto the highway.

Gibson County Sheriff George Ballard stated that half of the region lost electricity by 9 p.m. Tuesday night. Power outages were affecting nearly 3,000 homes in three different Indiana counties.

Insurers in Indiana that experienced this severe storm may need to outsource claims processing and adopt catastrophe services from independent claims adjusting companies.
