Hurricane Matthew prompts East Coast warnings, evacuations

Florida may have already prepared for storm damage this year, but a new threat prompted action elsewhere along the same coast. On Wednesday, Oct.5, the New York Times reported that Hurricane Matthew had reached Category 3 status and was set to progress upward through the Atlantic Ocean toward the United States. The storm system is predicted to travel along the Florida and Georgia coasts, eventually reaching South Carolina as well.

According to a storm map included with the source, the strongest part of the storm was expected to appear when it passes through the Bahamas and reaches Florida. However, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced evacuations. Gov. Haley's official site had started posting hurricane news on the main page, with three Southern County Evacuation Zones listed for Beaufort, Colleton and Jasper Counties.

In a series of related press releases, Haley declared a State of Emergency via Executive Order and advised evacuees to pack necessary clothing, medications and personal items as they left. Florida Gov. Rick Scott similarly warned residents to take immediate action to stay safe.

"Evacuations have started to be ordered this morning and I expect more counties to order evacuations soon," he said. "This is a dangerous storm and it is never too early to evacuate. If you live in a low lying area, on a barrier island, or in an area prone to flooding, you need to make plans to leave now."
