New California wildfire damage setting Kern County records

No matter where it ranks in the grand scheme of things, California's recent wildfire in the South Lake area may prove to be the most intense in local memory. The Associated Press recently quoted local Fire Chief Brian Marshall on the impact of a recent blaze that spread through wild dry brush and destroyed 200 homes as it raged over more than 70 square miles, with 75 houses damaged.

"There's still more threats out there," Marshall said, even after more than a third of the fire was contained. "This is going to go down as the most destructive wildfire in Kern County history."

Dubbed the Erskine Fire, this event went on to burn approximately 48,019 acres, according to a tracker featured by California public radio source KPCC. As of July 6, the fire was 98 percent contained, and yet it has still left a mark on the community, even in a state used to devastating wildfire damage.

According to data on the Insurance Information Institute, the number of insured wildfire losses has fluctuated over the years. In particular, insured wildfire losses accounted for more than half of the overall sum last year.

The same source noted that 2007 had both the highest rate of insured losses and the greatest amount overall. In 2015, California had the second-largest number of wildfires, after only Texas, and the third number of acres burned, behind Alaska and Washington.

Having skilled insurance claims adjusting professionals available to estimate the wide range of damages wildfire can create is essential to handling policyholder claims quickly. BrightClaim adjusters can be deployed within hours to help evaluate property and contents claims.
