Two dead in South Dakota fires

Besides the severe damage that fires may cause, sometimes family members may perish in these disasters. The Associated Press reported that Stephanie Bowers, a Montana resident, had lost her mother to a city fire that took place in South Dakota. The trailer her mother lived in had burned down, taking a life and leaving property damage behind.

Such scenarios are not uncommon and independent claims adjusting companies are left to handle contents services for insurers working with residents who've lost their homes.

So far this year, two people from Mitchell, South Dakota have perished in fires. Along with 59-year-old Cheryl Roop, a 3-year-old child died of smoke asphyxiation when a fire hit his family's home. Assistant Fire Chief Paul Morris said that these two deaths are tragic and hopes that no others occur in their community.

In August, significant fires hit Mitchell, causing the town to spend $1.3 million to cover property damage. This is five times as much as fire damage cost during the same month last year and the blazes totaled 62 before the month was out.

"The number of fires we've had has brought fire safety to the forefront of everyone's mind," Morris told the news source.

Fire Prevention Week in South Dakota emphasizes safety

A press release from South Dakota shows that officials are urging families to plan escape routes in case of a fire. Fire Prevention Week is taking place between October 7 and 13 and State Fire Marshal Paul Merriman encourages families to have at least two ways planned for their escaping during a disaster.

Insurance companies in South Dakota may need to focus on outsourcing claims processing to a claims vendor organization in times of significant fire damage and an immense number of claims.
